Just in case you’re in any doubt about whether or not you have a yeast infection, here’s some information on the symptoms.
Vaginal Yeast Infections
Yeast cells normally live inside the vagina in comparatively small numbers. When you develop a “vaginal yeast infection” what has happened is that the yeast cells have suddenly developed into a massive colony for some reason, and are growing out of control. Photos show yeast near the cervix and on the skin around the vulva.
Good bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus normally keep the yeast under control, so one cause of yeast infection is the use of antibiotics which kill Acidophilus. Another is the use of hormonal contraceptives, which also affect Acidophilus.
These infections are common enough, and they are reasonably easy to treat. The only thing you need to be aware of is that some other infections of the vagina may resemble yeast infections, and since they require different treatment, you need to know what’s going on.
A yeast infection – usually caused by Candida albicans – results in (sometimes very intense) itching or soreness in the vagina, together with external itching and soreness which can be intense.
There may be pain or burning when you urinate or try sexual intercourse. And although it doesn’t always develop, there may be a thin or thick, clumpy, white discharge that either smells faintly yeasty of has no odor. Sometimes, but not always, this looks a little like cottage cheese.
If you are in any doubt about the cause of your symptoms, please see a qualified health care provider.
If you practice good hygiene, you can certainly lessen the chances of infection.
Some Hygiene Tips
- Keep your vulva clean with the mildest soap and warm water. Rinse off all the soap.
- After defecation, wipe from front to back so no anal matter can contaminate the vagina.
- Use only cotton underwear that doesn’t hold warmth and moisture.
- Avoid any kind of tight-fitting clothing, panty hose, jeans, and s on which increase body heat and keep the genital area damp.
- After swimming, rinse in a shower and pput on dry clothes.
- Change feminine protection frequently.
- Do not use any kind of douche, deodorant, sprays, powders, or perfumes.
Male Genital Yeast Infection Symptoms
Men get yeast infections just as women get vaginal and vulval yeast infections:
The main causes of penile yeast infections are:
Sex: Candida albicans is transmitted during intercourse between infected partners, so a woman with an infection may infect her lover. If he then develops the infection (which can be symptom-free), it may be passed back and forth between the couple, rendering treatment for one of them ineffective.
So if you or your partner has symptoms suggestive of a yeast problem, use safer sex until both of you are free of the infection. You might wish to avoid vaginal intercourse, and ensure you wash your hands before touching your partner and avoid sharing sex toys.
Antibiotics will cause penile yeast infection if their use goes on for a prolonged period. The good bacteria can be destroyed by these medications, which allows the yeast to flourish out of control.
Men who have diabetes have higher levels of sugar in their urine, which promotes yeast growth.
Condoms with nonoxynol-9 spermicide may contribute to yeast infections. You can always switch to a non-spermicidal condom.
Men may have a genital yeast infection without any overt symptoms. But if the infection is serious, the itching can be just as bad as it is for a woman. Irritation and soreness of the head of the penis, with redness and itching, are typical.
And the dreaded discharge, including the cottage cheese like material, can be present too. In some cases, the penile glans may develop reddish spots or little blisters…..a problem is that these may resemble the blisters of genital herpes. Go and see a doctor if you are in any doubt.
